Program Mission
The mission of the Idaho Master Naturalist Program is to develop a corps of well-informed volunteers to actively work toward stewardship of Idaho’s natural environment.
Program Description (include how it meets membership criteria)
The Idaho Master Naturalist Program launched in 2008. Currently there are 9 local chapters across the state. This program consists of 40 hours of service and 40 hours of training for participant certification. The program was developed and is housed by Idaho Department of Fish and game, but many organizations and agencies host local chapters.
Program Partners
Idaho Department of Fish and Game and different partners for each chapter.
Curriculum (general objectives and topics, types of instructors, and planned time frame)
There are 22 written curriculum chapters available to participants. Each local chapter assembles their own syllabus based on curriculum choices, partners, and local resources. Chapters typically present 15 of the 26 chapters available. Guest speakers are brought in from partnering agencies and communities to teach the concepts or to highlight local resources and issues. Classes can be in the form of workshops, lectures, field trips, and on the job training.
Describe the service component of your program
Forty hours of volunteer work is performed by program participants for certification. In some chapters, volunteer work is limited to the agencies and organzations that sponsor the chapter. In other chapters, volunteer work can be performed for any organzation, as long as the nature of the work meets the mission of the program. Volunteer work tends to fall into the following five categories: Citizen Science, Education, Habitat Stewardship, Administration, and Chapter Formation/maintenance.
